Since
antiquity it has always been the political and social centre of
the city with the two most important buildings of the Catalan administration,
the Generalitat de Catalunya
and the Town Hall of Barcelona.
This
Square has witnessed the most important events of the recent history
of Catalonia, the proclamation of the Catalan State in 1931, the
return from exile of Josep Tarradellas in 1977 and the celebration
of the titles of F.C Barcelona with its fans crowded in the square.
