In
Barcelona, the night life is somewhat different from the rest of Spain,
where people go from bar to bar. Here, although the joints tend to be
clustered in areas, people use to spend the night in a couple of places
or 3 at the most. It's easy to move on foot within a zone, but it's advisable
to take a car or a cab to change of area.
Even
if it's difficult to define the areas, one may nevertheless classify them
according to the creatures of the night that roam them, or to their atmosphere:
For example,
in El Raval (West of La Rambla),
you'll find many turn-of-the-century bars; La Rambla and Pl. Reial are
full of terraces and small joints with a strong personality. The areas
of Barri Gòtic, El Born and La Ribera, combine the romanticism of the
old city with the newly designed interiors of its bars..
In the
Eixample, so much so around the Balmes-Aribau axes as on
the other side of Pg. de Gràcia, are lots of places, ranging from quiet
music bars to the most fashionable or modern discos. Upper north, the
area of Tuset-Santaló is a bit more "chic", whereas Gràcia combines
terraces and small "underground" joints..
Finally
the latest fashionable places (specially in summer), are the Port
Olímpic and surroundings, with its crowded terraces, and
Maremagnum at the Port Vell.
It's good
to know that night bars are open till 2 or 3am, so we strongly suggest
you not to try to change and head for another place at closing time, since
it would be difficult to find an opened joint. Instead, stay where you
are, and the party will probably carry on inside, with the doors closed.
Another possibility is to go to a disco (they close between 5 and 6am),
but then you will probably have to pay a cover charge..
As
for restaurants, we've chosen a list of places which constitute a fair
sample of the best places in Barcelona, for their music, atmosphere, for
their modern design, attractive decoration, for being originals or classics
of the night life, etc. We hope you'll appreciate it, and please send
us your comments and suggestions!
